Dam Square
If you are interested in viewing the best that Amsterdam has on offer for tourists, then your best bet would be to visit the Dam Square. In case you are planning not to visit it, you might well miss out on a number of important tourist spots in the city, inclusive of Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, which lies in close proximity to the square which is locally referred to as `de Dam.’
This square lies bang in the heart of the city and is rectangular shaped with its dimensions being 200 meters by 100 meters. Some of the most popular of tourist attractions like the one mentioned above are all located within close proximity to this square.
Those who are interested in architecture should check out the famous Royal Palace, a neo-classical delight, which also served as the city hall for more than a century and half from the year 1655. It was converted into a royal residence in the year 1808.
Just beside this palace you can find the famous fifteenth century New Church, designed in the Gothic style. Can you view the white stone pillar nearby? Designed by J.J.P. Oud, this pillar, erected in 1956, serves as a memorial to those who lost their lives during the Second World War.
